Having gained promotion via the play-off final last season, Dean Smith’s Aston Villa side looked to bolster their attacking options and bring in some new faces ahead of a return to England’s top flight.
Joining the likes of Wesley in moving to Villa Park was Trezeguet, arriving from Turkish club Kasimpasa for a transfer fee of £8.75m.
However since arriving in the Midlands, the 25-year-old has had little impact, netting just three goals and providing two assists during the league campaign so far.
Those statistics have left question marks over the Egyptian’s transfer fee and whether or not he has lived up to expectations.
Transfermarkt, a website who value players based on various statistical data, have dropped the winger’s value since his arrival to £7.02m, and that figure is likely to further decrease come the end of the season.
Reports of a potential summer exit after just one-year at the English club have been heard in media, and you would have to argue that the Midlands based club may be tempted to cash in and lose less than they could if the winger stays on.
Villa’s top-flight status is hanging in the balance, sitting 19th in the Premier League table as things stand, and a potential drop back down to the Championship could cost the club a significant amount of money.
That potential relegation, coupled with the decreasing market value of Trezeguet, means it may be that they are better off cutting their losses and writing his signing off as a bad deal.
