Tottenham are closing in on appointing Brentford manager Thomas Frank as their new head coach, with a formal approach expected in the coming days according to BBC Sport. Tottenham made the surprise decision to sack Ange Postecoglou despite the Australian ending the club’s 17 year wait for a major trophy.

Postecoglou lead Tottenham to a Europa League triumph, but was relieved of his duties 16 days later. The trophy did however come after Tottenham’s worst ever Premier League season, losing 22 out of 38 matches and finishing 17th in the table.

Tottenham now find themselves in search of a new man to lead the charge, and have identified Frank as the top contender. No formal dialogue has taken place but the 51 year old Dane is believed to be interested in the move.

Frank has impressed during his stint with Brentford, where he took over in 2018 before leading them to the Premier League in 2021.

He has since built a commendable Brentford side that have established themselves as a formidable Premier League club. The Bees finished 18 points above Spurs last season, grabbing a 10th place finish. They finished 13th, 9th, and 16th in their three previous campaigns.

Frank won’t come cheap though, with Brentford entitled to a hefty compensation package of over £10m. Frank is under contract with Brentford until 2027 and Tottenham would have to trigger his release clause to get the deal over the line.

That number could rise depending on how many staff members Frank decides to bring along.

Frank the leading contender for Tottenham

Frank has earned a reputation as a tactically sound manager, claiming scalps from each of the Premier League’s Big 6. He capped off his first ever Premier League game (August 13, 2021) by beating Arsenal 2-0, and also claimed an impressive away victory over Chelsea that season.

The following season brought wins over Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Tottenham. In May of 2023, he lead Brentford to their first win over Liverpool since 1938 when the Bees shocked the Reds 3-1 at the Community Stadium.

Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo were on the scoresheet that day, two players whose profiles have risen significantly under Frank. The duo have become one of the Premier League’s most dangerous thanks in part to Frank’s system and tutelage.

Frank has in fact overseen Brentford’s transition from many key players. Ivan Toney, Ollie Watkins, Said Benrahama, Neal Maupay, Christian Eriksen, David Raya, and Sergi Canos have all left the club during Frank’s reign  – each time leaving Frank the job of rebuilding.

Brentford more often than not target players with lesser profiles than the players departing, earning a reputation as a club with a shrewd business sense and exceptional scouting, with Frank at the forefront of reshaping the side.

Frank has previously worked with Tottenham’s technical director Johan Lange at Danish side Lyngby.
