Tottenham fans on Twitter were delighted yesterday when their club posted some news to get them away from the Jose Mourinho sacking. Tottenham announced that they’d activated a one-year extension in Jan Vertonghen’s contract, meaning he’s now contracted to the club until 2020.
The Club can confirm that we have activated the option to extend @JanVertonghen’s contract until 2020.

The club posted a link to the Tottenham Website for a slightly longer read on the Belgian’s contract update, including some key stats about the defender since he joined the club. With 264 games under his belt for the club since he arrived in 2012 and having won the fans’ player of the season award last season, you can see why the mood is great now that he’s renewed.
In truth, it’s not the biggest news that Tottenham fans will hear over the next few weeks. Vertonghen’s new contract isn’t even that, it’s just a one-year extension in his current deal that has been activated. Daniel Levy will have to get the chequebook out at some point and sit down with Vertonghen for a new deal, but for now he’s bought himself some time amd the fans are still delighted with it.

They should have given him a new three year contract with a pay rise. He deserves it. Not Just an extension trigger.

The Lilywhites are delighted to see Vertonghen extend his deal and will hope that the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen can follow suit.
