The London Evening Standard is reporting that Spurs and Belgian international defender Jan Vertonghen could be set for a new deal in the very near future with the club – delighting the Lilywhites fans here in the Transfer Tavern.
His current deal runs out at the end of next season and should he put pen to paper, he’d be following many of his team-mates in committing to the club.
The likes of Kyle Walker, Danny Rose and Eric Dier plus many more have signed new deals in recent weeks as Spurs look to build for the future, and the defender appeared to hint at his desire to say with his comments after the 0-0 draw at Bayer Leverkusen this week: “It’s important that so many of us are signing new deals and all think the same about Tottenham – the way we want to stay together for years and believe in what we are doing here. It is just great to be part of it.”
It had been suggested in the report that there’d been a bit of a rift between Vertonghen and Mauricio Pochettino after the game against Monaco, which Spurs lost 2-1, but the two appear to be fine with one another now and the defender looks set to be at the club for years to come.
Vertonghen is expected to start at the weekend as Spurs continue their title challenge away at Bournemouth.
Our landlord here in the Transfer Tavern genuinely thinks that Spurs have the best centre-back partnership in the entire world right now, a bold claim, but who else are as good as these two?
The Spurs fans here in the Tavern of course, wholeheartedly agree with the landlord on this one!
