Tottenham Hotspur keeping tabs on James Maddison

Tottenham Hotspur are keeping tabs on James Maddison’s situation at Leicester City.

The Lowdown: Tottenham targeting midfielder

Tottenham’s interest in Maddison is nothing new, with CBS reporter Ben Jacobs telling GIVEMESPORT back in October that the club could have a ‘big appeal’ for the midfielder, if they manage to secure Champions League football in back-to-back seasons.

That news followed on from a report that the player himself  has told friends that he would be “very keen” on a move to Spurs, as he believes he is capable of thriving at the level the club are at, which would be a step up from current side Leicester.

Now, it appears that Tottenham are still interested in a move, although they will have to fend off interest from plenty of other English clubs…

The Latest: Maddison in Conte’s sights

According to information from Football Insider, it is understood that the Lilywhites are still ‘keeping tabs’ on the Englishman’s situation with the Foxes, with the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle United also interested.

Tottenham latest news!

Former BBC radio pundit Noel Whelan, commenting on Newcastle’s interest, warned them:

“Waiting until the summer opens the doors for the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham.”

As such, it seems as if Antonio Conte will wait until the end of the Premier League season before he launches a bid for the playmaker.

The Verdict: Make it happen

The maestro has been lauded as ‘unbelievable‘ by football writer Raj Chohan for his vision on the ball, an appraisal that is reflected in his assist statistics, averaging 0.32 per 90 over the past year, placing him in the 97th percentile compared to his positional peers.

Chohan also claims that the 26-year-old could be ‘phenomenally good in an elite team’, however he is already reaching a very good level with Leicester, registering seven goals and four assists in 13 appearances, even more impressive when you consider the Foxes’ slow start to the Premier League campaign.

While Tottenham already have Rodrigo Bentancur available as an attacking option in central-midfield, Yves Bissouma and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg have a more defensive focus, so Conte could very much do with Maddison to provide some really healthy competition for his side in forward areas.
