Tottenham Hotspur could make an 'outstanding signing' in Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez after recent reports, says BBC pundit Alan Hutton.

The Lowdown: Spurs plot Martinez offer...

The Argentina international, who helped guide his nation to an historic 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar, is being linked with a move away from Villa Park this summer.

Martinez has become a man in demand since his Argentina exploits last year and Spurs are believed to be suitors.

Antonio Conte's side, who are preparing for life without the Italian, also need to contemplate who can step in to Hugo Lloris' shoes between the sticks. Lloris' deal expires in 2024 with the Frenchman's form seriously dipping this season, prompting Tottenham to consider potential replacements.

According to journalist Gaston Edul, writing on Twitter, the north Londoners could make an offer for Martinez 'in the coming weeks' as they target Lloris' heir.

He said:

"Tottenham have specific interest in Dibu [Emiliano] Martínez and may make an offer in the coming weeks."

The Latest: Hutton thrilled by Martinez news...

Speaking to Football Insider, former Spurs defender and BBC Radio 5 Live man Hutton has claimed the 30-year-old would be an 'outstanding' signing.

He explained:

I think Martinez is an outstanding goalkeeper.

They have still got to factor in the Arsenal link and how is he going to be with that? Some players would not go anywhere near it because of that.

I know he was not a number one for Arsenal for a great length of time, but he was there for a long time. So would that be a factor? Maybe.

I want to see him stay at Aston Villa but there is no getting away from the fact that he would be an outstanding signing.”

The Verdict: Brilliant option...

Going by the glowing endorsements of teammate Matty Cash, it appears Martinez could well be a stellar signing at Spurs if they do make a move in the next weeks.

The Poland international, speaking about Villa's number one, said this last year:

"He (Martinez) normally buzzes off clean sheets. The first thing he said to me in the dressing room was: ‘I’m gutted we conceded’. He’s unbelievable. One of the best goalkeepers in the world. To have him there is really good for us. He has made so many big saves for us.”

The South American ace clearly has a really good mentality and one which could hugely benefit Tottenham's dressing room.

Replacing Lloris is a mountainous task for the Premier League top four hopefuls but it appears Martinez could well be a brilliant option.
