Tottenham Hotspur are now among the favourites to sign Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie as reports from Italy share an update.

The Lowdown: Lilywhites eye McKennie move...

The Lilywhites and manager Antonio Conte are said to be contenders for McKennie's signature in the lead up to January with reports suggesting they have even taken transfer steps.

Contact has apparently been made with the player's entourage already, as per Italian media, with Spurs plotting ways to strengthen their squad as they chase Champions League qualification for next season.

The north Londoners are currently fourth in the Premier League standings but have conceded 11 in their last five games, losing three of them, potentially meaning they need to strengthen.

The Latest: Spurs among favourites for McKennie...

Now, as per another report out of Italy from TuttoJuve, it appears Spurs have emerged as one of the favourites to sign McKennie.

The USA international, fresh off the plane home after reaching the World Cup Last 16, is the subject of real interest but Conte's side and Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund are the only teams who could 'compete' for the 24-year-old.

While it is believed Dortmund are currently in front of Spurs as things stand, TuttoJuve also state that Tottenham 'attracts the boy' and his club would gladly accept a fee around €20 million (£17m) - an affordable sum.

The Verdict: Get it done?

£17m is hardly a financial gamble on chairman Daniel Levy's part but we believe central midfield isn't exactly a priority for Spurs.

McKennie has been called 'sensational' for his national team role but Conte currently has a plethora of solid options in the middle of the park.

Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg have been phenomenal and highly-rated starlet Oliver Skipp comes as a brilliant back up option.
