Tottenham: Cristian Romero set to return vs Fulham

Tottenham Hotspur have been handed an injury boost after Antonio Conte confirmed that Cristian Romero is set to return for Saturday’s Premier League game vs Fulham.

The Lowdown: Romero’s spell on the sidelines

Spurs played out a 1-1 draw against West Ham at the London Stadium in midweek, but will now return to home soil to take on the Cottagers this weekend.

The 24-year-old missed that and the previous two games after sustaining an injury in the 2-2 draw with Chelsea earlier in the season, but now looks set to be staging his return.

The Latest: Conte’s team news

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Conte revealed that Romero is back in contention for the tie against Fulham, alongside Rodrigo Bentancur.

As quoted by Tottenham’s official website, he said:

‘Cuti was back in training earlier this week after an adductor issue, but didn’t feature in the final 20-man squad for our 1-1 draw at West Ham on Wednesday night. Bentancur also missed out at West Ham after coming off at Forest, but is available again to face Fulham.

“Cuti had a training session with us and is in the squad. Lucas Moura and Bryan Gil are still not available. The other players… we have to check a couple of situations to make the best decision for Saturday.”

The Verdict: Boost for Spurs

Romero has recently put pen to paper on a permanent contract with Spurs which shows the club view him as part of their long-term project, and it’s a huge boost having him available for selection again.

The Argentinian, hailed for his ‘stunning’ defensive performances by sports journalist Josh Bunting, has only made two appearances this season due to his injury but has averaged 3.5 clearances and the same number of tackles, alongside making two successful dribbles per 90 minutes (WhoScored).

This highlights the impact that Romero can have both at the heart of the backline but also driving forward, and slotting him back into the squad should help Conte’s side continue their unbeaten Premier League record this weekend.
