Tottenham right-back Djed Spence is believed to be in ‘advanced talks’ with fellow Premier League club Brentford regarding a January move across London.
The Lowdown: Spence’s Spurs nightmare
The 22-year-old joined Spurs from Middlesbrough back in the summer, having shone on loan at Nottingham Forest last season, helping them seal promotion.
Spence has suffered a nightmare things of things in north London, however, failing to convince Antonio Conte and making just six appearances to date.
In fact, he has only appeared for five minutes of top flight action and it looks as though his future could lie away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Latest: ‘Advanced talks’ with Brentford
According to Football Insider, Brentford are now in ‘advanced talks’ with Spence over an initial loan move that could become permanent further down the line.
There is also reported interest from Southampton, Crystal Palace and Brighton, with Spurs giving the ‘green light’ regarding his exit, assuming they can replace him with Pedro Porro.
The Verdict: Right time for a move
Quite what has happened to Spence this season is up for debate, but it has been a disastrous period for him, having been hailed as ‘unbelievable’ by Ian Wright last season.
It could be that Conte simply believes he isn’t yet ready to compete at the highest level or he may feel that there is a lack of professionalism on show, as was rumoured during his time at Middlesbrough.
A loan move away could do the £25,000-a-week Spence the world of good, however, allowing him more regular football and giving Spurs the chance to assess his worth from afar.
He is clearly a player of great potential, as he showed by scoring twice and registering four assists at Forest last term, but a decision may need to be made about his long-term future in the summer.
