Tottenham’s January transfer window was relatively quiet, with just two additions arriving through the door.
Brazilian youngster Souza completed a move from Santos, while former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher joined from Atletico Madrid.
Since then, much of the attention in north London has centred on the managerial situation following the dismissal of Thomas Frank after a difficult spell that left Spurs hovering just above the relegation zone.
However, fresh reports suggest that behind the scenes, there was also significant interest in one of Tottenham’s brightest young talents — interest the club firmly resisted.
Spurs Reject Chelsea Approach for Bergvall
Tottenham reportedly turned down January enquiries from both Chelsea and Aston Villa for Lucas Bergvall.
The 20-year-old Sweden international enjoyed a standout campaign last season under Ange Postecoglou, playing a pivotal role in Spurs’ Europa League triumph and earning the club’s Player of the Year award.
However, opportunities became less consistent under Frank, with Bergvall starting 16 matches and occasionally being deployed in a wider role.
According to The Athletic, Chelsea and Villa — both long-term admirers — made direct contact with Spurs to explore the possibility of a deal during the winter window. Tottenham, though, made it clear he was not for sale.
Bergvall, once described as “unstoppable” by Pep Guardiola, joined from Djurgarden in June 2024 and signed a contract extension just a year later, tying him to the club until 2031.
He is currently sidelined after undergoing ankle surgery following an injury sustained in the Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund, and is expected to be out for up to three months.
Tottenham’s refusal to entertain offers underlines how highly Bergvall is valued internally, despite recent turbulence at the club. With a long-term contract in place and strong belief in his potential, Spurs appear determined to build around the 20-year-old rather than cash in — even amid growing interest from Premier League rivals.
