When Liverpool signed winger Mo Salah from Roma last summer for £34m, it made big news, but for the wrong reasons.
The then 25-year-old was famous in England for his unsuccessful stint with Chelsea. The Egyptian spent three years at Stamford Bridge, which included a loan spell at Fiorentina and Roma, and only managed to feature 13 times for The Blues, scoring twice.
When Liverpool announced this on Twitter, Chelsea fans, and any other fans in the league, flocked to comment on the news, deriding Liverpool. The winger was labelled as a Chelsea reject and a waste of money, as fans pulled no punches in mocking The Reds.

Those fans aren’t laughing now.
The Egyptian was sensational last season. Not only did he help guide Liverpool to the Champions League final, individually he won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year, the FWA Footballer of the Year, the Premier League Golden Boot with 32 goals, Premier the League Player of the Season, as well as winning the FIFA Puskás Award for goal of the season and coming third in the The Best FIFA Men’s Player.
No one from any club in England could deny that he was the best player in the Premier League last season, and arguably the best player in the world for the first half of 2018. It was a deal that exceeded all expectations, and made £34m look like a bargain.
Fans will think twice before mocking a signing again.
