Over the last few transfer windows, thanks to the financial backing of Farhad Moshiri, Everton have spent big.
The Toffees’ new financial status, however, has not stopped them from bringing in players on the cheap entirely, evident from the acquisition of Cuco Martina last summer.
The 29-year-old arrived at Goodison Park on a free transfer following his contract expiring at Southampton and, while it may have looked like a good deal from the Merseyside club’s perspective, supporters were far from impressed.

Having worked with Ronald Koeman at Southampton and with the Dutchman needing right-back cover for Seamus Coleman, there was some logic behind the move, especially considering he did not cost the club a transfer fee.
That being said, Martina’s limitations during his time as a Saints player were on full display for everyone to see, limitations he brought over with him.
When it comes to 1v1s, defensively, the Curacao international is atrocious. Having to use him in the Premier League for an extended period was never going to end well.
After a difficult season, Martina now finds himself playing in the Championship with Stoke City for the campaign, though it is likely his long-term future is also set to be away from Goodison Park.
All in all, his transfer to Everton has not worked out, reaffirming why supporters were so underwhelmed with his arrival at the club.
