Liverpool: Manuel Veth delivers update on Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Jadon Sancho

German journalist Manuel Veth has provided an update from Kicker on Liverpool’s current transfer situation as they eye up some of the Bundesliga’s finest young talents.

According to the report, Liverpool are favouring other potential targets over Bayer Leverkusen’s Havertz, and Sancho will reportedly only be an option if Sadio Mané leaves for Real Madrid.

#LFC prefer other targets over Kai Havertz. Jadon Sancho is an option only if Sadio Mané leaves for #RealMadrid, who want the forward. Timo Werner is seen a better fit for Klopp's system (kicker).

The La Liga giants are very keen on Liverpool’s Senegalese winger, with Zinedine Zidane making him a top priority for the summer (via Daily Mirror). However, former Anfield ace and notable pundit Steve McManaman has claimed that Mané won’t be going anywhere, which if true, means Liverpool must find Sancho’s mammoth asking price (up to £187million) from elsewhere.

Veth claims that Werner is the best fit for Jurgen Klopp’s side, which is an opinion also shared by James Pearce. The Leipzig star has the better record over this current season (tallying 27 goals and 12 assists – via Transfermarkt) and could cost as little as £50million (via Liverpool Echo). Indeed, Werner’s versatility across the front three (Transfermarkt note he can operate as a striker and a winger) could also benefit the Reds by providing cover and competition across the frontline at, theoretically, a cheaper rate than Sancho.

The addition of the 24-year-old could, in theory, also see Klopp create a whole new attacking dynamic, opting for two midfielders instead of three and seeing Roberto Firmino play just behind Werner up front. As noted by Liverpool.com, he offers an alternative in the striking role, while the Brazilian’s build-up play (previously praised by Klopp) may be useful as No.10, a position he has played 82 times across the course of his career according to Transfermarkt.

If the reigning European champions continue to pursue Sancho, they will have a headache over how and when to play the 20-year-old who will certainly be wanting regular first-team action.

What do you think, Reds? Should Liverpool look to sell in order to fund the move of Jadon Sancho? Or should they stick to Timo Werner only?
