The Newcastle fans are in the Transfer Tavern tonight and they are discussing their club’s worst signings of the past ten years.
Much like any other club, Newcastle United have had their fair share of bad signings in their time.
The last ten years have been quite the roundabout period for the club.
Getting relegated in the 2007/08 season, winning promotion again in 2010 and then finishing fifth in the 2012 season, only to tumble down the league and get relegated again in 2016.
Now they are finally back in the Premier League and have a talented manager at the helm, it is looking like the Magpies could be climbing back up the table again soon.
It has been a quiet transfer window for Rafa Benitez so far but looking at some of their worst signings in the last ten years, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
On that note, here are the four worst Newcastle signings since 2007.
Alan Smith
Following on from a relatively unsuccessful spell at Manchester United, Alan Smith joined Newcastle in 2007.
Strangely enough, the striker was moved into a central midfield role upon his arrival and eventually into a more defensive midfield position.
This along with never truly recovering from his leg break meant he didn’t score a single goal during his time at the club.
Luuk de Jong
The Dutch striker joined the Magpies on loan to see out the remainder of the 2013/14 season.
De Jong was struggling for places at Borussia Monchengladbach which led to the loan spell and it was easy to see why.
De Jong failed to score in 12 appearances for Newcastle and was sent back to Germany.
Romain Amalfitano
Newcastle took a bit of a gamble on Romain Amalfitano who joined on a free after his contract with Reims expired.
He never made a domestic appearance for the club and was quickly loaned out to Dijon, with the move made permanent a year later.
Xisco
Named by the Newcastle Evening Chronicle as one of the club’s worst ever strikers, Xisco did not have a good spell as a Magpie.
Signing for £5.7 million in 2008, the Spaniard only played nine times before having his contract terminated in 2013.
