‘We should be after Bale’ – Newcastle fans on Twitter react to legend’s surprise transfer comments

The Toon Army in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating confirmation that Amanda Staveley will succeed Mike Ashley as owner of Newcastle United…

Amanda Staveley has been strongly linked with taking over at Newcastle United since Mike Ashley confirmed that he had put the club up for sale back in October, but the speculation has stepped up in recent weeks now that the British businesswoman has placed a formal bid.

Naturally, the resident Magpies propping up the bar are excited by Staveley’s potential takeover due to her ties with Middle Eastern investors and royal families.

Now that Newcastle are back in the top-flight, the supporters believe they need to strengthen throughout the team to ensure that they cement their position and avoid becoming the next yo-yo club.

Although nobody is completely sure on the level of investment Staveley could bring to the club, it is fair to say that expectations are high.

However, it is unlikely that many Newcastle supporters share the same level of expectation as Shay Given, who believes The Magpies should be targeting Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez following Staveley’s take-over.

And Given’s comments have been met with hysteria on Twitter by the majority of supporters who believe the Irishman is getting slightly ahead of himself…

Here’s what the Newcastle supporters had to say in response to Given’s comments.

When looking for news on the takeover, ending up reading that Given want NUFC to sign Sanchez. OKEY! Add Messi & Ronaldo to that list. Lets go! LoL, takeover talks in FM mode now. #NUFC

I reckon we'd get there, especially with an ownership and a Rafa Benitez who are on the same page. But talk of getting "the" Sanchez is fantasy IMO, this january or at any point. Players of his calibre are just not within our reach in the timescale Shay was thinking of 🙂 #nufc

Shay Given is one of my heroes, but howay man, Alexis Sanchez to Newcastle might be a bit ambitious… #nufc https://t.co/cOfXiigl6s

Just to clarify it before the #AFC fans start taking shots at us.

NO #NUFC FAN BELIEVES WE WILL BE SIGNING SANCHEZ FROM YOU. Not a chance. Ain’t happening.

Disagree with Sanchez in January, but not everything Given says here is as ridiculous as it might sound. I do think it will be better to have gradual building, however, rather than straight away trying for huge stars – rather like Man City did, as mentioned in this piece #NUFC https://t.co/x3x1yGegSp

@mbatey79 haha. Aye shay, let's get messi and that neymar lad too.

What a load of rubbish. We should be after Bale……
