Arsenal fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern were anxiously awaiting the 2016/17 season, with many convinced that this was their year – but in typical Arsene Wenger fashion, this excitement was followed with yet more disappointment.
The fact that the game finished 4-3 gave flattered an Arsenal side that in reality was very disappointing, with boo’s ringing around the stadium upon the sound of the final whistle.
Arsene Wenger has a lot of work to do before transfer deadline day, and whilst the focus has always typically been entered around potential incomings; Wenger also needs to take a look at his current crop of players.
Some of them simply aren’t good enough to wear the Arsenal shirt.
Here are THREE players that Arsene Wenger MUST axe after 4-3 Liverpool defeat……
Rob Holding
Rob Holding was thrust into the Arsenal XI out of need rather than want; and things went the way that you would expect.
He was outclassed at the back, playing in the heart of a disappointing Arsenal defence.
Now, he is a recent signing – so he shouldn’t be sold; but he is nowhere near ready for a regular first team place in the Arsenal first team.
He needs to go out on loan, and Arsene Wenger needs to pull his finger out and sign some quality defenders. Otherwise this season will almost certainly be his last.
Calum Chambers
Rob Holding’s central defensive partner was not much better, and his lack of form looks set to continue through yet another season.
A goal added a bit of shine to an otherwise disappointing performance, with Callum Chambers continuing to look out of his depth in the heart of the Arsenal defence.
He had an impressive pre-season, so there is talent somewhere; but Chambers is simply not ready for the spotlight.
Like the Holding, Arsenal MUST bring in more defensive talent, or risk wasting the entire season.
Whether you sell or keep both Holding and Chambers; the need for at least two central defenders is clear for everyone to see.
Jack Wilshere
This one is sure to upset all of the Arsenal fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern, but the Arsenal fan favourite’s time at The Emirates must be up.
At this point he is simply taking up space in the Arsenal squad, failing to play each week and looking average when he is given the chance.
If he isn’t fit to start on the opening day of the season – will he ever be ready? Arsenal should look to cash in on the midfielder, with a club like Manchester City no doubt willing to pay over-the-odds for the English midfielder.
They could then reinvest that money in some much needed, consistent, quality.
