Speaking to Football Insider, regular BBC pundit Danny Mills has been wowed by striker Michail Antonio for his performances before his injury – wth Mills going on to say he has been ‘magnificent for West Ham‘ as GSB plot their next huge move in offering him a new deal.
Antonio, who lead the line for David Moyes’ men before an unfortunate hamstring injury sidelined him for a month, has arguably been one of the Hammers’ most crucial assets so far this season alongside star names like Declan Rice.
Should West Ham offer Antonio a long term deal?
No, a short term
The Englishman was often utilised as the sole frontman and was tasked with holding up long balls and bringing others into play – with Mills claiming he deserves a new deal for his efforts.
Mills on Antonio deal
However, while he has indeed been ‘magnificent’, Mills also warns the West Ham board against potentially offering him a new deal too long term – amid claims by Football Insider that GSB are preparing to tie him down with a fresh, bumper contract.
“I think he’s done exceptionally well, he’s been magnificent for West Ham, and I’m sure they appreciate him.
“I’m sure he wants a long contract and I’m sure West Ham are going to go ‘well, you’re 30 now, when you get to the end of this one, you’ll be 32 so how long can we offer him? How long is it going to be this good for?’
“There’s no point offering him a five-year contract and after two years, it might start to be a burden. It’s a difficult one.
“The player is doing unbelievably well at the minute and deserves a new deal but it’s about the length of that.”
Transfer Tavern take
While Mills could have a point, there’s little arguing Antonio has earned talks over a fresh contract – with the length still yet to be decided.
As he is wowed by how Antonio has blossomed under Moyes, this claim that he deserves a new deal, but maybe not a long term one, could spark debate amongst the Hammers supporters.
