Speaking in a post match press conference, West Ham United manager David Moyes, when asked if he had any message for Sebastien Haller after his horror miss against Man United by reporters, dropped a reassuring three-word response as the Ivorian attracted plenty of criticism.
Despite an impressive overall performance in the first half from Haller, who was consistently harrying the Man United backline, he somewhat faded in the second half after the Red Devils’ comeback.
Will Sebastien Haller come good for West Ham?
Yes, bags of ability
No, waste of money
Haller’s outing, however, was summed up in the media by one horror miss which could have put the Hammers 2-0 ahead by half time – with the striker rounding Red Devils shot-stopper Dean Henderson but slipping and failing to convert the golden opportunity.
Haller sent a subtle message
Afterwards, when asked to react and send a message to Haller by reporters, Moyes simply stated a simple three-word message ‘it was offside‘ in a reassuring signal to Haller after his glaring opportunity went begging.
Indeed, regardless of the club record signing’s spurned chance, Moyes claimed to the media that it would have been chalked off anyway – letting Haller off the hook.
“I think the big thing, I think it was offside. Because the linesman didn’t flag you put it down as a chance and in my book, it was an offside decision so it never because a chance,” explained the Hammers boss via football.london.
“I haven’t looked back at it but the word I got was that it was offside anyway.”
Transfer Tavern take
As the attacker faces mounting pressure to replicate the influence of Michail Antonio, Moyes subtlety backing his man to the media will come as a sigh of relief as he could easily have chosen to criticise him if he so wished, but the manager knows he needs his striker feeling confident, so blasting him in the press would have been unwise.
Whether or not he can build upon his Sheffield United performance, where he bagged a crucial winning goal, remains to be seen – but Irons supporters will certainly be hoping so.
