There is a lot of talk surrounding 18-year-old Oliver Skipp at Tottenham at the moment. That only increased when he was handed his competitive debut for Spurs recently.
The midfielder came on in Tottenham’s League Cup victory over West Ham at the London Stadium, and that may have been the first time the teenager was noticed by fans outside of the Tottenham fandom.
The Spurs under-23 player has already had many comparisons drawn between him and current midfielder Harry Winks, with many believing Skipp has a greater dribbling ability.
Whilst this is certainly a name to look out for, it may be slightly too early for Mauricio Pochettino to throw the young man into action in the Premier League. Then again, with various injuries and players out of form at Tottenham at the moment, nothing is out of the question.
Tottenham may be going through a major transitional period over the next few months in their midfield, with players moving on. It has long been speculated that servant and star Mousa Dembélé is reaching the end of his time in white. The 31-year-old is in his seventh season for Spurs, and may well be on the decline; Daniel Levy will want to let him go before it’s too late. Likewise, Victor Wanyama’s injury woes at Tottenham have made him fairly undesirable, and could well be leaving too.
That will leave a void in the midfield for Tottenham that will be filled by Harry Winks and Eric Dier it looks like for now. But Skipp will be fast-tracked up the pecking order and promulgated to the forefront of Pochettino’s plans. He could well be the man to partner Winks in the heart of midfield for years to come, forging a notorious partnership.
While a loan option may be on the cards in order to give the player exposure to first team football, there is no denying that Skipp will have a major part to play in Tottenham’s future if he continues to progress the way he has been.
