Things are looking very good for Rangers at the moment compared to last season.
The Gers are six points and two places better off than they were at this stage in the Scottish Premiership last year (after 13 games), and are only two points behind bitter rivals Celtic, compared to nine in 2017.
Furthermore, Rangers’ European future is in their own hands, with one win remaining. A victory against Rapid Wien would guarantee progression to the next round in the Europa League. With the additional factor that they made the Scottish League Cup semi-final, manager Steven Gerrard can say that his first few months in charge have been quite a success.
The Liverpool legend is clearly building something at Ibrox, and has a lot of young, talented players at his disposal.
However, the one thing that Rangers fans have always needed to accept that this job is simply a stepping stone for the 114-cap England international. There is only one club that he has his sights set on, and as soon as he’s ready, it is likely that he will be shoehorned into the hot seat at Anfield.
The trouble is, even though his managerial career has been relatively short so far, Gerrard is already making a big name for himself. The question will start to be asked as to how long he will remain at Ibrox. He may get some silverware this season, he may not, but if he continues in the trajectory that he is currently on, Rangers will need to start lining up a new boss.
This is just a fact of football that Rangers fans will need to accept- that Gerrard is only going one way, and he may eventually be too good for Rangers.
