Newcastle United supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this weekend after seeing their side lose 3-1 at Premier League champions Chelsea on Saturday, thus suffering an eighth defeat of the campaign while at the same time extending their winless run to six matches.
Rafa Benitez’s men made a fine start to life back in the top tier of English football by winning four of their opening nine games, yet their recent poor run has seen them plummet down the table towards the relegation mire. And although Dwight Gayle gave them an early lead at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, that was as good as it got for Magpies fans as a brace from Eden Hazard as well as an Alvaro Morata header sealed a comfortable 3-1 win for Antonio Conte’s men, who in turn sealed a tenth victory of the campaign, while at the same time instigating Newcastle’s fall to 15th in the table.
Subsequently, there have been many disappointed and frustrated Magpies supporters in the Tavern in recent times, many of whom are wondering exactly where it has gone wrong for their side following their solid start to the season.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for those Newcastle fans lining up at the bar to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Aleksandar Mitrovic could be on his way out of the club in January.
The fan favourite has failed to start a Premier League game for Benitez’s side so far this term, which is all the more pertinent given that, in the main, the Magpies have struggled for goals having netted just 14 times in their 15 games.
Yet the Serbia international has rarely been called upon by Benitez and as such he is reportedly seeking a move in January, while reports also suggest that former employers Anderlecht are interested in re-signing him.
And this news has stimulated quite a mixed response from Newcastle fans on Twitter…
