I don’t know about you, but I’ve been thinking about Robbie Keane… (Oh, you haven’t? how embarrassing for me). Well, what with a prospective move to Fulham being mooted this week, I have, indeed, been thinking about Robbie, and I make no apologies for it.
Certainly, it seems Keane may soon be heading for the White Hart Lane exit, and you have to wonder if offloading him to Craven Cottage this summer is an opportunity to good to pass up.
Keane has been a great servant and productive outlet for Tottenham in the past and so it is unfair to criticise too heavily. His primary Spurs spell was distinguished. A vital and vivid creative force, he became a popular figure and duly scored over 100 goals. His contribution at White Hart Lane should not be underestimated.
However, that was then, this is now, and football is a fast changing and hard-nosed game. It’s a shame, but since returning from Liverpool, Keane has just not cut it at Tottenham. Last year his movement was substandard, he looked sluggish, off the pace, and offered very little; hence, an outward loan deal ensued.
Keane is, simply, superfluous at White Hart Lane and not part of future plans. A world class forward reaching their zenith is required ahead of a vitally significant season, and so it seems prudent to offload now whilst interest is evident and some extra transfer funds could be garnered.
The Spurs Ship is primed, the wind is right, the sails are up, but decks need clearing.
Thus, Robbie’s future seemingly lies elsewhere, and both Fulham and Aston Villa have been strongly linked.
Now, although I suggested he has no future at Tottenham, he does undoubtedly have life left in him and the potential to flourish elsewhere (and not just in a condescending ‘here you go, a few scraps that we deemed not good enough for our dinner table, but you pathetic little peasants can gleefully gorge away on the dirty floor’ kind-of-way).
A stagnant and spent force at one club can well be revitalised at another, such is the nature of football. Indeed, it has been proven in the past – only last year with Darren Bent, to stay on topic – that a change can blow those languid cobwebs away, and Robbie’s successful loan spell at Celtic last season (scoring 16 times from only 19 appearances) reinforced the fact he remains a deft player. Evidently, get his confidence back and you can profit.
Robbie needs reviving. Picture if you will (come on, come along on the journey) Keane sprawled inertly on the floor, big Martin Jol looming over him with warm, bated breath, offering mouth-to-mouth resuscitation; granted not a pleasant image, but it could prove fruitful for Fulham, (or Villa, if you wish to replace Jol for O’Niell – hey, it’s your fantasy, do what you want).
At 30-years-old, Keane has a Premier League future, just not at Tottenham.
Good luck, good night, safe journey onwards, you pointing, shouting, little scamp.

What on earth does Jol see in Fulham?

Nice work, sir.
Keane must be sold ASAP his presence and general attitude was the sole reason for his loan deal with Celtic and hopefully a return there would suit everyone. It cannot of course be another loan, as his age is prohibitive and would therefore reduce his value. But anything over 8 million should be taken from the hand that offers it, preferably any rings or watches as well.
Yeah, if we were where we should be, he’d be one of many with 100 goals at Tottenham. Clive Allen did 50 in a season. He’s gotta go.
I’ve posted a lot on this idea lately – offer Keane plus cash to Celtic for Samaras before its too late!
Indyfan,
You’ve drawn some giggles there, but for the record, I’d swap Keane for a pair of windscreen wipers or anything that was useful and didn’t scowl at me.
I think it’s rich of Spurs fans to say Robbie isn’t good enuf for them anymore. He wasn’t given a chance when he returned from Liverpool. Rednapp is supposed to be a top manager but he didn’t give Keano a chance. Keane was low on confidence after Rafa Benitez’s treatment of him. All he needed was for Rednapp to tret him better and tell him he had a future at spurs but he didn’t do that. Spurs fans are carrying on like they’r already in the Chumps Lge but they have yet to win thru the qualifying round. Spurs are making a huge mistake getting rid of a class player like Keano. He would score plen ty of goals fopr them in the Chumps Lge if they kept him but i guess they’r willing to cut their nose off to spite their face. I would be very happy to have Robbie at Villa for nxt season but if Spurs think they’r gonna get 8mil for him then they’r havin’ a laugh
Keano’s dope you plonkers!
Liverpool tapped him up and then took him for nearly £20m just two seasons ago! Before that he was a big hero at the lane for six years!! He had a bad time at Liverpool that knocked his confidence but then he bagged 16 in 19 games for Celtic!!
I want him back in the side doing his somersaults and firing his pistols! He’s a god. Have respect.
…and shut up about pointing and shouting. It’s effective pitch communication!
Plonkers.
samaras……..????? is that you samaras..?? its laughable really. keane plus cash for a greek heskey
Swampspur,
Wake up and smell the coffee mate. The Keane you’re talking about is the Keane of old when he was firing with Berbs, and before that doing his “21 gun salute” cartwheels.
Since Berbs went to Man Ure and Keane to ‘Pool, he’s become a shadow of his former self. You can’t compare the Keane of old with today’s Keane, even you can see his shooting boots have deserted him. Take the £8 mil, spend it on a younger, hungrier player and let Keane move on to pastures new to help him revitalise his flagging career…
Yep the Game is certainly all about opinions, and I’m getting my ribs in traction as I painfully type this after reading Indyfan’s posting, I really wonder at times what exactly some people are actually watching, as to even attempt to justify Keanes return from Liverpool or his staying and doing well is beyond belief, any offer, just take it please, because his attitude and presence caused enough disruption in the camp for Harry to ship him out to the Scottish backwaters, rather than put up with his childish and petulant behaviour. He had more chances than enough..and enough is enough
