Wolves: Club reject Sanderson move

Premier League side Wolves have reportedly rejected a chance to send defender Dion Sanderson out on another loan this month.

Sanderson is currently on loan at Sunderland, but Championship side Cardiff City wanted to take the young defender on loan for the second half of the campaign.

Sanderson deal rejected

The Daily Mail have reported that Cardiff had made an approach to check if Wolves would be interested in ending Sanderson’s loan deal at the Stadium of Light, so that they can sign him on a loan deal themselves for the second half of the campaign.

Nuno Santo’s side rejected this offer from the Welsh side, meaning that Sanderson will stay at Sunderland for the remainder of the year.

Sanderson was loaned out to Sunderland in October and he is expected to stay there until the end of the season. The defender has previously been at Cardiff, as Wolves had loaned the 21-year-old out to the Welsh club in January last year.

The Englishman has made only nine appearances in all competitions for Sunderland this season, playing seven times in League One.

Sunderland boss Lee Johnson recently said: “I had a discussion with Wolves about that quite early [in my tenure] and I think they were understandably a little bit frustrated with his game time.

“But I think we’ve proved that it is there for him and with as many games as we have coming up, he’s a player I like, he’s a good lad, trains well and has some real quality.”

Sanderson decision makes sense

Considering how Sanderson has hardly played for their first-team, he may not have been of use for Wolves if he did return to the club right now and since he’s playing a fair bit for the Black Cats,  with Johnson looking like he’s ready to give him even more gamete, staying there should only help his development, as things stand.

Wolves currently have five options for the centre-back position and they may not need any more players for that spot so he’s not needed at the moment. The club were rightly concerned about his game time at Sunderland but if that situation is set to improve, then it makes sense to keep him there.
