Wolverhampton Wanderers are now close to completing the signing of Bristol City goalkeeper Daniel Bentley, according to journalist John Percy.
The Lowdown: Wolves targeting Bentley
It was reported back in December that Wolves were targeting a January signing to provide competition for first-choice goalkeeper Jose Sa, with Pierluigi Gollini previously being linked with a move to Molineux.
Earlier this week, it came to light that Julen Lopetegui was plotting a move for Bentley, who is out of contract at the end of the season, and now the move looks like it is edging towards completion.
The Latest: Deal close…
According to Percy, the Old Gold are actually now ‘set to sign’ the goalkeeper, subject to him undergoing a medical, which is pencilled in to take place today.
Wolves’ current back-up option, Matija Sarkic, is then expected to leave the club to make way for the new signing, joining Stoke City on a loan deal for the remainder of the season.
The Verdict: Solid back-up
While it is unlikely that the 29-year-old gets much game time, given that he has not made the Bristol City starting XI since October, he is a solid enough back-up option for Sa, given his level of experience.
The 6 foot 3 colossus has made 428 professional appearances at club level, including 13 in the Championship so far this season, weighing in with four clean sheets in the process.
Given that Bentley is Bristol City’s club captain, there is an indication that he also possesses leadership qualities, which will also be useful to have in the dressing room, as well as during matches, when he is tasked with organising his defence.
Wolves will hope to wrap up the signing of Bentley in the coming days, alongside midfielder Joao Gomes, who they still remain hopeful about signing.
