Wolves: Wanderers look set to lose Fernando Marcal this summer -Wolves News

Wolves now look set to lose Fernando Marcal to Botafogo in the summer transfer window, with talks ‘going well’ between the two clubs.

The Lowdown: Lage favourite

Marcal seems to have established himself as a favourite under Bruno Lage, playing more often than not this season, with the Portuguese manager seemingly preferring him to Rayan Ait-Nouri in the left wing-back position – the youngster has started less top flight games.

Should Wolves start Marcal?

It was a risk signing him from Lyon back in 2020, as he was 31 years of age and on the decline, perhaps especially after footage of a bizarre own goal that he scored against PSG went viral.

Nonetheless, now 33, he is a player that Lage seems to trust, and has been part of a defence that have conceded a mere 23 goals in total in the Premier League so far this season, the fourth-best record only behind Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool.

The Latest: Botafogo talks

As per journalist Thiago Franklin, talks are ‘going well’ between Brazilian club Botafogo and the Molineux faithful over the transfer of Marcal, and there is now great ‘confidence’ that a deal can be done in the summer.

It would spark the end of his Midlands career, after two years at the club.

The Verdict: Replacement needed

The Wanderers should not look to get rid of Marcal so easily, without finding a suitable replacement first.

Yes, they have Ait-Nouri and the versatile Jonny as other left wing-back options, but the latter has been struggling with injury problems for a number of seasons.

Marcal has actually been solid as well this term, ranking highly among his teammates in terms of average aerial duels won, interceptions, clearances and crosses per game in the Premier League (WhoScored), and so he will not be easy to replace.
