Wolverhampton Wanderers: Matt Doherty says club can qualify for Champions League - Wolves News

Wolverhampton Wanderers player Matt Doherty has rather boldly claimed that the Midlands club can qualify for the UEFA Champions League ahead of the 2019/2020 restarting, as he revealed to Indian outlet The Hindu (via The Express and Star).

As per the outlet, with the Premier League season set to resume for the Molineux outfit away at West Ham United in a couple of weeks, Nuno Espirito Santo’s team currently sit in sixth place in the table on 43 points.

They are only five points off fourth-placed Chelsea whilst even fifth could seal a Champions League spot if Manchester City’s appeal against their ban of two years for breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, which begins on Monday with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, is unsuccessful.

Would not qualifying for the Champions League still be a successful season?

No

“To hear the Champions League music playing as you walk out, that is really dreamy,” Doherty told The Hindu.

“We’re fighting on two fronts, in the Premier League and the Europa League, so a lot of things are possible.

“We believe we can qualify for the Champions League as we have beaten a lot of big teams this term.”

As alluded to by Doherty, Wolves are very much still in the UEFA Europa League as well, midway through a last-16 tie with Olympiacos, having drawn the first leg in Greece 1-1 with Pedro Neto on the score sheet.

The wait to find out when the rest of the Europa League games will take place goes on, but the 28-year old is glad to have clarity on the English top flight at least.

Indeed, Doherty has made 39 appearances in all competitions for WWFC so far in the 2019/2020 campaign, scoring seven goals and making three assists, according to Transfermarkt.

The Irish international, alongside his teammates, may well be confident that they can qualify for Europe’s elite competition for the next term given that they are already fighting on two fronts.
