Wolves have reportedly set their sights on Velez Sarsfield midfielder Maximo Perrone, with an approach already made.

Perrone seems to have been on the Molineux radar for a number of months now, with speculation over a move emerging in the summer.

Wolves were thought to be in talks over a transfer for the Argentine teenager, but as we know, a deal failed to materialise. The 19-year-old, who can play as a holding or central midfielder, has since seen his Transfermarkt valuation increase to €8.5m, and it looks as if Wolves are still keen on his services.

The Latest: Transfer update

Sports Witness relayed a recent update from Record regarding Wolves and Perrone. They claimed that Wanderers and Premier League rivals Newcastle United have set their sights on the left-footed midfielder and have made an approach about a move.

However, a further update from Fabrizio Romano has suggested that Manchester City are set to trigger Perrone's $8m release clause.

The Verdict: Future star?

Matheus Cunha recently became the first signing of the Julen Lopetegui era, and it doesn’t look as if the Brazilian will be the only January arrival.

The club could make up to six new signings, so Perrone could be one of those going off the summer interest and this recent update.

He has been described as a 'spectacular' prospect by Argentina legend Gabriel Heinze and a 'wonderful talent' by scout Ron Dor, so he could be a future star and therefore, a winter window swoop may be looked back on by Wolves chiefs as a smart move, but they'll need to act fast.
