Wolves: Steve Madeley wants Julen Lopetegui as new manager

Wolves: Steve Madeley wants Julen Lopetegui as new manager -Premier League News

Departed Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui is the best candidate to become Wolves‘ new manager, according to an update from journalist Steve Madeley.

The Lowdown: Lopetegui leaves Sevilla

Wanderers’ search for a new boss remains ongoing, following the sacking of Bruno Lage last weekend after the 2-0 defeat away to West Ham.

Lopetegui has emerged as the front-runner to replace the Portuguese and he parted ways with Sevilla in midweek, following their 4-1 hammering at home to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

While the Spaniard clearly wasn’t performing for the La Liga side, he still looks like a strong contender to come in and improve Wolves given his experience at the top level, having managed the likes of Porto, Real Madrid and Spain.

The Latest: Madeley drops fresh update

Writing on Twitter, Madeley claimed that Lopetegui remains the leading candidate to take charge at Molineux, even if he could be a little jaded currently:

“Wolves need points in the 7 games before (the World Cup). Don’t get me wrong, I don’t see a better candidate than Lopetegui at present. He ticks a lot of boxes. I just hope, if it’s him, that he has sufficient fuel in the tank.”

The Verdict: Not perfect, but a good choice

Lopetegui’s disappointing end at Sevilla is proof that he has flaws as a manager but it is also clear that the positives outweigh the negatives overall.

He won the Europa League with them back in 2020 and is a manager with genuine pedigree, called an ‘excellent‘ coach this week by Dortmund boss Edin Terzic.

While his sacking in midweek may have caused some alarm among the Wolves fanbase, the 56 year-old certainly looks one of the most reliable options, and known for his attacking 4-3-3 system would bring more exciting football than Lage.
