Wolves: Liam Keen shares Pedro Martins ‘development’

Groupama Stadium, Lyon, France - September 30, 2021. Olympiacos coach Pedro Martins shakes hands with referee Alejandro Hernandez.

Wolverhampton Wanderers journalist Liam Keen says fans may be happy that managerial candidate Pedro Martins is close to joining Hull City instead.

The Lowdown: Martins set to become Hull boss

Following the sacking of Bruno Lage after the 2-0 defeat to West Ham in the Premier League last weekend, Fosun and Jeff Shi have been on the lookout for a suitable replacement in the dugout.

Several names have been circulating at Molineux, including the likes of Eusebio Di Francesco and Ruben Amorim, with another being the former Olympiacos boss Martins.

The Daily Mail reported that the 52-year-old was a frontrunner for the job, though The Telegraph’s John Percy shut down claims by revealing that he wasn’t under serious consideration, with the Portuguese now close to reaching an agreement with the Tigers.

The Latest: Keen reacts to latest development

Taking to Twitter, Keen confirmed that Wolves were interested in Martins but never made an official approach, with supporters seemingly pleased by the news.

“Reports suggesting Pedro Martins is close to joining Championship side Hull. Wolves were aware of him and considering him, but not made a move.

“If Twitter reaction is anything to go by, Wolves fans will be fairly happy at the latest development.”

The Verdict: Blow for Wolves?

Most Wolves followers appear satisfied by the news that Martins won’t be making the move to the Midlands, but his track record is actually exceptional.

During his time at Olympiacos, the Feira-born coach only lost 37 of his 221 matches in charge (winning 143 and drawing 41), and even guided his former side to three consecutive Greek Super League titles.

This level of consistency and success is exactly what the Old Gold need, but with Martins now ruled out, only time will tell who the hierarchy will appoint over the next few days.
