Wolves: Journalist reacts to Ruben Amorim manager links

Wolverhampton Wanderers would be making an ‘exciting appointment’ should they be able to land Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Wolves suffer Amorim setback

The Premier League side are yet to replace Bruno Lage following his sacking after the 2-0 defeat to West Ham last weekend, though Fosun and Jeff Shi have been extremely busy identifying potential successors.

Several names have been doing the rounds at Molineux, including the likes of Julen Lopetegui and Ange Postecoglou, but the 37-year-old Amorim was seemingly one of the first to enter the fold.

The Portuguese is claimed to have been the Wanderers’ top target after his compatriot’s departure, though that may have suffered a setback after he admitted that he is happy with his project in Lisbon.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s comments

Speaking to The Transfer Tavern, O’Rourke claimed that Wolves would be delighted to secure Amorim as the man to take over the reins from Lage.

“It’d be a really exciting appointment. I think Amorim’s regarded as one of the best young coaches in Europe with what he’s done in Lisbon, and obviously, they’re in the Champions League right now as well.”

The Verdict: Next to impossible

Whilst Wolves are a highly regarded club, it’s unlikely that Amorim would leave Sporting given the success he’s currently enjoying there.

The ‘frightening’ job he’s done in Portugal, as dubbed by sports journalist Josh Bunting, has been an outstanding 96 wins in just 134 matches in charge, losing only 21 (Transfermarkt).

Amorim also has five pieces of silverware to his name having won the Primeira Liga, League Cup and Supercup titles, so for him to swap this for the Midlands right now is probably unrealistic.
