The Lowdown: Anfield controversy

Wolves were left to settle for a replay after a controversy-filled FA Cup clash against fellow Premier League side Liverpool finished 2-2.

Goals from Goncalo Guedes and Hwang Hee-chan either side of Darwin Nunez’s and Mo Salah’s strikes saw the Old Gold avoid defeat against the Reds for the first time in exactly four years when they knocked Jurgen Klopp’s side out of the FA Cup in the third round.

Fast forward almost half a decade and Julen Lopetegui’s side believe history should’ve repeated itself following a string of controversial decisions all going against the Molineux side.

The Latest: Neves’ post

In the wake of the draw, Neves took to Instagram to post a message of thanks and support for the fans and his teammates.

In the Instagram post (relayed by THE WOLF PACK on Twitter), the Portuguese also took a cheeky dig at the officials with the Old Gold left feeling severely hard done by.

“So proud of everyone, massive effort. Unfortunately 3 goals at Anfield was not enough to go through, but we will now play at home. A fantastic support from our fans, see you all Wednesday” #wolves #wwfc”.

First up in this Wolves transfer quiz, who was the last player to be signed by Bruno Lage at Molineux?

The Verdict: Frustrating day

Wolves found themselves on the wrong side of controversial match-defining decisions in the form of Salah’s go-ahead goal and Toti Gomes’ potential match winner which was given offside.

The Egyptian profited from a loophole in the offside law which saw his original position of offside become onside when Toti attempted to intercept a ball aimed for the winger, but later became onside following the defender’s action despite him only intervening to avoid the offside forward a chance at goal.

A potential match-winning moment was also denied with VAR absurdly unable to find a single image that could prove whether Matheus Nunes was onside or offside in the build-up to a third goal, with the linesman’s original decision of offside standing.

The replay will take place on Tuesday 17th January with Wolves holding all the motivation possible to get into the hat this time around.
