For the first time since his appointment, Jurgen Klopp has come under a little pressure from the Reds fans here in the Transfer Tavern and further afield.

It is only slight, of course, as many still feel he is the man to return the good times to the club but recent results have suggested that is nearer away than thought earlier on this season.

Before this month the Reds were considered title contenders and looked good to get into the EFL Cup final but now we are looking back on a month of poor form, a semi-final defeat and a title challenge hanging by a thread.

This is Jurgen Klopp’s biggest test to date with the Reds thanks to the added expectations the first half of the season raised and our landlord is intrigued to see how the German deals with it.

The main man behind the bar has his own suggestions, too, and so here are three of them to get them out of this rut…

Emre Can

Often, with our local Reds punters, one player comes in for some criticism one game and his performances for the next few get magnified.

Play poorly in those and you’re going to get battered by our Liverpool supporters and Emre Can has fallen into that trap. The German has been mediocre at best in recent games and has duly been hammered so Jurgen Klopp needs to get hold of him and improve him. The midfielder has promise but it’s becoming less apparent.

Poor squad depth

When Sadio Mane was signed in the summer everyone knew – barring awful form or injury – he’d be off to AFCON 2017.

Certainly, Jurgen Klopp and FSG would have known and yet here we are well into that tournament with nothing been done. It’s indicative of the whole approach to transfers this season and duly the Reds’ squad has been caught out at this most hectic of periods. Everyone saw it coming, too, that’s what really grates on our Liverpool fans.

Mental fragility

People go on about Arsenal being mentally weak but the Reds cannot get away from that either.

At least, when the Gunners have played poorly this season, they’ve managed to recover whilst the Anfield club have gone into free-fall. Sure, they’re brilliant in the big games but in the nuts and bolts fixtures against ‘lesser’ sides they’ve blown it too often and there’s a real sense this lack of confidence or professionalism for those games runs throughout a lot of the players.
