3 reasons why Southampton’s Pelle is perfect for Chelsea

Share

Despite Chelsea having captured Michy Batshuayi already, it seems that they are not done looking at offensive targets this summer, and Blues fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have been feverishly throwing names about as to who may be on their way to Stamford Bridge, and there is one that keeps popping up.

Since the departure of Ronald Koeman from Southampton, rumours have persisted surrounding the future of star striker Pelle, with many news outlets suggesting that he will follow his boss to his new club.

In the last few days however, Chelsea have emerged as front runners for the Italian’s signature, with the club looking to seal the deal as soon as possible.

Whilst on the surface the deal does seem to have come out of nowhere, when you look at the details of the transfer, it all starts to make a bit more sense.

With that, here are THREE reasons why Southampton’s Pelle is perfect for Chelsea

The Cost

One crucial aspect of a potential deal for Pelle, especially when compared to a number of other targets, is the fact that he will cost significantly less than anyone else.

Of course a lot of this has to do with his age, given that he will be 31 this year. But for Chelsea this will not really be an issue; he will mostly be used as a second or third choice striker, and so will only get game time every few weeks. The Blues could easily get a few years out of the Southampton man if used sparingly.

The fact of the matter is that Chelsea already have two top strikers, and to sink another £30 million into a third just to sit on the bench would be a waste of money. The price of Pelle makes him the perfect Chelsea target.

Now of course, the fact that he is cheap does not take away from his quality. He has proven over the last few seasons, and this summer in the European Championships, that he can go with some of the best strikers in world football.

His style of play means that even when he is having an off day, he can still cause danger to defences; and that is exactly what Chelsea need.

You have the commitment of Costa, the pace of Batayushi; and then the power of Pelle; it is a perfect trio.

If the Blues are under the cosh and need an outball; Pelle is exactly that. And lets not forget his excellent goal scoring record at Southampton, having scored 23 goals in just two years.

Familiar with Conte

Due to their exploits on a national level; it is of course significant to recognise that Pelle and Conte already have a relationship, built from their time together for the Italian National side.

This is important in a number of ways. First and foremost, it will help him adapt to life at Chelsea, which will of course be invaluable.

But perhaps more importantly, it also means that Pelle will not need to adjust to Conte’s style of play, and will be able to settle right in with the Blues.

This will mean he can get straight into doing what he does best; scoring goals.

Pelle offers a low risk, high reward target for the Blues; and this one could definitely happen.
