Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern were again left crying into their pints this weekend, as another abject display from the Magpies saw them go down 5-1 to Crystal Palace.
To make matters even worse, the Eagles are of course managed by former Newcastle manager, Alan Pardew.
In truth, it has been a poor season so far from Newcastle and indeed, far worse than in previous years.
Despite big money signings on the likes of Alexsandr Mitrovic, Giorgino Wijnaldum and Florian Thavuin, Newcastle are playing like a Championship club at this moment in time. If things do not improve, it could soon become a reality.
Most of Newcastle’s problems do appear to lie at the back, while the above names have not done much to change Newcastle’s toothless attack, it is the lack of strength in depth in defence which would cause most concern. Below, we named 5 Newcastle players who could soon be facing the axe.

Fabricio Coloccini

Though Collocini has been a good servant for the club, the Argentinian simply isn’t good enough to start in the Premier League anymore. As the captain, Collocini should be leading from example, but he makes far too many mistakes and cannot cope with the pace of the game anymore.
In fairness, it is not entirely his fault, and the powers that be at Newcastle should know that he is past his best by now.
Papiss Cisse

One thing that might have pleased Newcastle fans on Saturday was to see the return of Dutch forward Siem De Jong, who has been awfully unlucky with injuries. What this could mean, however, is that Pappis Cisse could be deemed surplus to requirements.
The Senegal forward is likely to be behind Ayoze, Mitrovic and De Jong in the pecking order, so is there much point in keeping him on?
Yoann Gouffran

Another who simply isn’t good enough, the French midfielder is unfortunately a passenger in the side. Not long ago, Gouffran found himself playing in central midfield against Manchester City, a game in which they went on to lose 6-1.
With the forward positions heavily occupied anyway, a move would probably suit both parties.
Mike Williamson

If Newcastle want to stay up, they need to improve their defending fast.
A return from a loan spell at Wolves for Mike Williamson would certainly not be a way in which to improve their back-line, and they should either look to keep him out on loan at Molineux for the rest of the season, or attempt to make the deal permanent.
Sylvain Marveaux

A former player of Pardew who simply offers nothing to the side or squad. Marveaux has very much become a bit of a forgotten man at Tyneside, and similarly to Gouffran, just isn’t going to offer anything to the Newcastle side.
Equally, staying at Newcastle isn’t going to benefit him, so he really ought to pack his bags too.
