Paul Pogba, currently set to be the largest transfer record to date of £89 million, is one of the hottest prospects in modern football and Man United want him back.
However, this has divided punters in the Transfer Tavern as to whether or not he’s worth that much and who United could spend the money on instead, as realistically that much money could buy a few quality players and strengthen many positions.
Our landlord has been deliberating with the regular punters here in the Transfer Tavern, and thinks there are a number of players who would be great signings, instead of using all that money on one player.
With that said, here are FIVE top players Man United could sign instead of just Paul Pogba…..
Jack Butland
With the seemingly eventual departure of David De Gea to Real Madrid, United are in need of a top class goalkeeper to replace the Spaniard and Butland could be a perfect, and cheap replacement.
The young Englishman is finding his feet well and continues to grow as a player, having had a strong season with Stoke seeing him called up to the England squad, unfortunately to be ruined by an injury.
However, his talent and further potential is not something to be ignored and at an estimated £10 million for such a young talented keeper, he would be a perfect yet cheap replacement.
Marquinhos
The 22 year-old Brazilian is a very talented player who can play both centre-back and right-back, which would prove very useful for Mourinho to solve United’s somewhat unstable defensive problems.
The PSG defender has been linked with a few big clubs in the past, such as Chelsea and Barcelona, however he lost his place in the PSG first team and played rarely for them last season often covering at right-back.
The defender would most likely cost around £25-30 million but would bring a lot more stability to the team.
Kyle Walker
The Spurs right-back was a highlight of England’s squad let alone defence during the Euros this summer, giving 100% going forward and defending throughout the competition and throughout a strong Spurs season where he was a key element to both their strong defence and devastating attack.
Walker would more than likely cost around £15-20 million but Mourinho will be keen to solve United’s right-back problems, as he did when he arrived at Chelsea when he signed Ferreira, a player who served the club for eight years.
Eric Dier
Yet another English player who has shone in the past season, Eric Dier is a great CDM/CM who gives 100% in every game and every tackle.
The young Spurs player can also finish well, as shown with his goal against Russia at the Euros finals, and with Mourinho seemingly willing to sell Schweinsteiger, Dier could be a strong and young replacement.
Dier’s current estimated value is around the £20 million mark, although may cost a bit more.
Riyad Mahrez
The current Premier League Champion has been linked with a move to Arsenal as of late, but is certainly on a lot of club’s watch list.
His skill, vision and spectacular finishing makes him a threat to any team and would be very valuable to United’s attacking lineup.
The Algerian won’t come cheap however, estimated at around £30 million.
