Though Jose Mourinho is yet to truly get the Manchester United faithful in the Transfer Tavern fully on side, there’s little doubt the Portuguese remains at the forefront of European football.
So much so in fact that, according to the Daily Mail, the 53-year-old was offered the Old Trafford job way before he eventually took it back in May.
According to the report, the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ was given the opportunity to succeed Sir Alex Fergurson in 2013, when he was in charge of Real Madrid.
He is thought to have secretly met Ed Woodward in the back of a van outside the Vicente Calderon prior to Real’s games with city rivals Atletico.
Still, the ex-Inter Milan coach is said to have told Woodward he had already agreed to return to former club Chelsea at the time.
The gig at the Theatre of Dreams soon went to David Moyes and latterly Louis van Gaal as the Red Devils’ fortunes soured.
Despite winning the Premier League again, Mourinho’s stock has also nosedived ever since too, as he was sacked by the Blues in December 2015.
