Former Rangers manager Alex McLeish heaped praise on midfielder Steven Davis and the impact he’s had on Steven Gerrard’s side since his return to Glasgow.

Davis the midfield controller

The 35-year-old veteran has been a great example for the Scottish Premiership side over the years and is currently into his second stint at Ibrox.

Gerrard decided to bring him back from Southampton in January 2019 on a six-month loan spell, which was then made permanent last summer.

The Northern Ireland captain is yet to score this season for Rangers but has impressed the Ibrox faithful so far with a string of impressive performances.

It’s not just the fans who Davis have impressed, but also Alex McLeish has been pleased watching him from the sidelines. Speaking with Ibrox News, the 61-year-old is pleased to see a player that can control the midfield for Gerrard’s team.

“Stevie Davis is a great player,” he said. “We came across him in his Fulham days and I really think he’s a very composed midfielder.

“He now knows all about where to go and how to do it – saving the legs now that they’re not the fresh young legs that he had back in the day.

“He’s still very important to the team. That’s what I felt was missing at times last season, that midfield controller, but Stevie looks as if he’s doing that extremely well.”

Gerrard’s key asset

Having become the record appearance holder for his country last night, it just shows what sort of influence Davis has not just in the Rangers’ dressing room, but wherever he goes.

The Gers have got off to a strong start this season and they have Davis to thank for his contributions in the middle of the park, which has helped them maintain their unbeaten record in the Scottish Premiership.

At the age of 35, Davis continues to prove that he can be the player that he was before Rangers’ demise in 2012, which will be a big boost for Gerrard as they look to capture their first league title since 2011.

McLeish is right. It’s a breath of fresh air for the supporters that their side has such a talented an experienced international player in midfield. Let’s see if he can help Rangers take that next big step towards silverware.
