Alfredo Morelos: the angry champion Rangers want and need, believes Warburton

Colombian forward Alfredo Morelos is undoubtedly one of the most controversial players in Rangers’ current squad.

His dismissal at the weekend against hopefuls Aberdeen marked yet another chapter in the player’s less than satisfactory disciplinary record, which currently consists of eight yellows and four reds, bringing forward the question: is he really worth it?

For us – yes.

Morelos has an exemplary record in front of goal so far this campaign netting a total of 23 times in 35 games and assisting a further 10 more. And, yes, he’s a little unorthodox, but that’s surely what fans will love about him. Their very own resident hardman – someone only they can get behind whilst just about everyone else in the footballing world despise them.

The perfect champion for Rangers’ resurgence.

If, however, the darker side of Morelos’ game does impede his progress, former Rangers boss Mark Warburton believes there’s a very easy answer to the problem in Jermaine Defoe.

In an interview with the Daily Record Warburton said: “I just see a real talent and someone like Defoe will be a great mentor for him, someone who has played at the highest level can be good for him.

“The penny can drop with young players. If they’ve got an angry side and the red mist comes down, you can work with them.

“It’s harder when they are older. It’s too ingrained and in their blood. It’s the same in life, if you work on a building site or are a cab driver, if you are angry at 27, you’ll always be angry.

Even if Morelos fails to address his aggression Warburton believes Rangers should just “go with the flow” as the pros often outweigh the cons.

For now, the Colombian remains Rangers star man.
