Are these 3 really the best Aston Villa players this season?

Rather unsurprisingly for our resident fans of the club here in the Transfer Tavern, Aston Villa are undergoing another topsy turvy campaign.

After a dire Premier League season last year that saw them go down with a whimper into the Championship things seemed to be getting worse for the Villans, as they struggled to adapt under new boss Roberto Di Matteo.

Indeed, the Italian boss himself couldn’t get to grips with the division and he was sent packing to be replaced by Steve Bruce.

That, though, is where this rollercoaster appears to climb.

Bruce has enjoyed a decent enough start to life at Villa Park and seems to have plugged the holes in a quickly sinking ship.

It looks as though the players are responding too as their performances have been far better in recent weeks and so maybe a happy ending could be on the cards after all.

But who has been the best Villa player so far? Here are the top three courtesy of whoscored.com

 Jordan Ayew – 7.45

Jordan Ayew

Ayew is a real star and would be good enough to get into a lot of Premier League sides.

In credit to him, he stayed at Villa to fight the cause and is naturally leading by example.

Four man of the match awards, as well as two goals and four assists, are to his name already this season and if Villa do manage to come back up, he’ll be a big reason as to why.

 Jonathan Kodjia – 7.25

Kodjia joined Villa in the summer but initially looked like a bit of a flop. He just couldn’t get going under Di Matteo but it looks as though he’s found his feet now.

He’s now got four goals to his name in the Championship this season and looks a different player under Steve Bruce so Villa fans will be hoping that the best is yet to come from the forward.

 James Chester – 7.08

Chester has Premier League experience and it appears he has used that to decent effect individually at least.

Whilst the Villa defence still needs some work, and it will surely get some under Steve Bruce, Chester has gone about his business in good fashion and would be a big help if Villa get into the Premier League again.

He has one of the highest aerial duels ratings in the squad too, at 3.4 a game.
