There are some rather wry smiles in the Football Transfer Tavern with the latest claim from Metro.
The publication seems to think that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is targeting Tom Cleverley this summer.
Of course as our punters note, the Manchester United midfielder has come in for more criticism than most this season, and actually thinks that it is unjustified.
Over pouring a round of pints, our landlord makes the point that Cleverley actually thinks that his is more akin to a Xavi or an Andres Iniesta than a player in England, and that is why he is misunderstood on our shores. Clearly as deluded as his former manager then!
It has bemused the vast majority of punters in the tavern that when given a £70 million kitty, Wenger decides to target a player that even David Moyes did not deem to be good enough to play in the first team.
A couple of our punters over by the pool table seem to think that this is exactly the kind of example that shows why Arsene Wenger should be leaving the club this summer and not allowed to spend any money.
If Wenger really has targeted an opportunity to land Cleverley this summer, has he quite simply lost the plot? Let us know your thoughts below.

Cleverly is a good player and its far too soon in his career to write him off. Just remember Aaron Ramsey before you start going off on one about the lad not being good enough
Except Ramsey suffered a career threatening injury, and he never hit the depths of Cleverley. Let us not forget a match rating of 5 against the worst team in the world. Cleverley can’t pass more than 5 yards, he doesn’t take people on and he doesn’t shoot often enough to make up for those faults. The mere suggestion that Arsenal would look to dign a player who couldn’t get a game at Wigan is ludicrous
I think at the end of the day Cleverly strikes me as a player who could do really well converting to DM. He currently seems to play the wilshere/Ramsey attacking CM but personally I think if Wenger bought him he’d be like “copy Flamini and you’ll never leave my team”. He’s not the greatest at passes granted but he’s not bad at tracking back and making interceptions. Not only that but he can also be quite a dirty player sometimes which is exactly what Flam was like in his early days. He’d be a good DM for us and would certainly be a Wenger-bargain compared to some of the more expensive options out there.
Well said. Exactly right, although personally, I don’t “fancy” Cleverley as being good enough for Arsenal.
i thnk cleverly wont add value to arsenal.
Wenger has long lost it, Arsenal will remain as they are until the day he chooses to leave our dieing club. Cleverly is just one of his clueless brain. My happiest day will be d day he leaves. Yes he has done well for d club but he shouldn’t ruin d club before he leaves. My advice for him is to leave now while d ovation is high.
Ata, who said that Arsene Wenger wants to sign Cleverley ? Who on earth is Rebecca Knight ???
We need lars bender for the Dm role not cleaverly
