Arsenal’s summer overhaul is being discussed throughout the Transfer Tavern this week but it’s not just incoming deals that are making headlines.
The Daily Mirror suggests Southampton are eyeing a move for Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, with their intention being to bring the England international back to the south coast- five years after he departed.
22-year-old Oxlade-Chamberlain has struggled to find consistency with the Gunners, as his performances have been hampered by numerous injury problems and a loss of form, with this season in particular seeing the winger drop down the club’s pecking order.
Theo Walcott, Danny Welbeck and Joel Campbell all present regular competition to Oxlade-Chamberlain, whilst a new threat for his position has emerged through young prospect Alex Iwobi, with the Nigerian starring in the past two Arsenal fixtures.
As such, speculation has suggested Oxlade-Chamberlain could be offloaded this summer and Southampton have joined the race for his services.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has two years remaining on his current contract and Arsene Wenger is keen not to lose this young asset but his hand could be forced by Oxlade-Chamberlain’s demands of regular first-team action.
Arsenal fans, would it be a mistake to let Oxlade-Chamberlain leave? Let us know in the comments below!
