Aston Villa are set to step up their interest in Middlesbrough striker Britt Assombalonga, that is according to a report from the Northern Echo.
The West Midlands side are actively looking for a striker in the January transfer window after their first choice forward Wesley was ruled out for the rest of the season following an injury he sustained against Burnley on New Year’s Day (BBC Sport).
Assombalonga is a proven striker in the Championship with 65 goals in 175 appearances (Transfermarkt), but he hasn’t enjoyed his most prolific campaign this year, with just six goals in 20 appearances for Boro (Transfermarkt).
He has never played in the Premier League in his career, so it would certainly be a gamble on Villa’s part if they did sign the 27-year-old to spearhead the team as they battle to avoid relegation from the top flight.
And it seems that most Villa fans don’t think that the Congolese striker would be a good addition, with plenty taking to Twitter to urge the club not to sign the Middlesbrough man.
