Aston Villa receive McGinn and Digne injury boosts

Aston Villa have been handed a double injury boost ahead of their game at home to Leicester City on Saturday, with Lucas Digne and John McGinn in contention to play.

The Lowdown: Injury troubles

Digne was brought off after just ten minutes against Leeds United during Aston Villa’s last home game, missing the trip to Southampton with a shoulder injury, however he thankfully did not require surgery.

As for McGinn, the midfielder has been out for a little while longer, missing six games with a hamstring injury, but a promising update has now been issued for both players ahead of the Premier League match this weekend.

The Latest: Back in contention

As reported by Birmingham Live, both players are back in contention this weekend, with Digne expected to push Alex Moreno for a place in the starting XI.

The Scottish midfielder does not seem as likely to be handed a start, but it is detailed that he will be involved in the squad in some capacity.

The Verdict: Boost for Emery

Hailed as ‘outstanding’ by former Villa boss Steven Gerrard, McGinn started the previous three games before his injury setback, which indicates that he is also thought of in high regard by Emery, bagging an assist in his last match against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Considering the 28-year-old is also the club captain, he will be a good presence to have on the pitch if he does get some minutes, with his importance to the team highlighted by the fact he has made 17 appearances in the league this season, not once being benched.

Moreno has done a decent job at left-back in Digne’s absence, helping Villa to a clean sheet in the 1-0 win against Southampton last time out by winning three tackles and winning four ground duels.

However, the Frenchman is more proven in English football, amassing 143 Premier League appearances, compared to just two for Moreno, and so Emery will be pleased to have the more experienced player available for selection.
