With Crewe being in League Two, there is the temptation for Villa to play some of their squad players and youngsters, a prospect many of the club’s supporters are looking forward to seeing.
Villa have brought in 12 new players during the summer, as per the official Premier League website so there will be plenty of players in need of game time to help their integration.
In addition, there are players such as Keinan Davis who are unlikely to get much game time in the league so would benefit from getting some minutes under their belt.
While Dean Smith will be very wary of underestimating the opposition, this is a good opportunity to bring some of his squad members up to speed.

Should be a decent game. Gives us a nice opportunity to rotate and let a few people get a run out / get their confidence up. Not to be underestimated though.

Be a good run out for players on the fringes.
