Aston Villa: Alan Hutton fears for Trezeguet’s hopes of keeping his place

Aston Villa: Alan Hutton fears for Trezeguet’s hopes of keeping his place - Aston Villa News

Former Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton believes that Trezeguet should be the “most scared” of losing his place in Dean Smith’s starting line-up after last Friday’s 3-0 defeat to Leeds United.

Trezeguet dropped to the bench

The 26-year-old started at Villa Park as Patrick Bamford scored a hat-trick for the visitors to condemn the home side to their first league defeat of the season.

From the 66 minutes that the Egyptian left-winger played, Trezeguet was given a match rating of just 6.36, making only eight passes, losing possession five times and committing five fouls (Whoscored) in what was a night to forget for him and the Villains.

This was despite his team beating reigning champions Liverpool 7-2 before the international break, while this result appeared to be more of a reality check than a stepping stone as far as results are concerned.

Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton questioned Trezeguet’s performance and feels that other players will be gunning for his place in the squad if it continues. He said:

“I mean, if you look at the whole Aston Villa team, it’s the position that is up for grabs, in my opinion.

“Obviously they paid a lot of money for Traore so he’s had to wait for his opportunity. I thought Trezeguet was quiet (v Leeds) but I think you have to look at the whole team, they never got the service that they would want.

“They defended really deep and when they eventually got the ball back, there was nothing, there were no options, Leeds were swarming all over them. It was a difficult night for all the attacking players.

“He’s probably the one that’s most scared of losing his position.”

Next game can change everything

The old saying goes that ‘you are only as good as your last game’, and this certainly rings true with Trezeguet at this time.

The Athletic journalist Gregg Evans previously said that he was a “scapegoat” and put in some eye-catching performances which will have proved his critics wrong (via This is Futbol). Unfortunately, the Egyptian’s detractors would have been proven right after his last game.

So far in his Villa career, Trezeguet has scored seven times from 47 appearances since his £8.75m move from Turkish side Kasimpasa last summer, taking his overall career tally to 46 goals (TransferMarkt).

Villa need to bounce back, with Southampton up next for them on Sunday, but they remain third in the Premier League table for the time being behind the Merseyside duo of Everton and Liverpool.

Seasons are long in football and a judgement needs to be made on Trezeguet when all is said and done. Only then can a respectful or cynical analysis be put across about the player.

In other news, former Premier League player sympathisers with “outstanding” Aston Villa star.
