Aston Villa will not be trying to sign Norwich City midfielder Todd Cantwell this summer, according to The Athletic’s Michael Bailey.

As to be expected, a number of Villa supporters were quick to share their thoughts on the transfer news via social media.

Villa were expected to make their move for the Canaries ace after Jack Grealish joined Manchester City in a deal worth £100m.

Talks for Cantwell were believed to be underway between the clubs, with Villa keen to make the 23-year-old their fourth big-money signing of the summer after moves for Emiliano Buendia, Leon Bailey and Danny Ings, and a fee of up to £50m was being mooted in some quarters.

However, according to Bailey, Norwich’s correspondent for The Athletic, Villa won’t be coming in for the England under-21 international during the summer window. Bailey didn’t add too much detail as to why, but it seems as if Villa will now move on to alternative Cantwell targets to replace Grealish.

The Canaries ace featured alongside Buendia as Daniel Farke's side won the Championship title last term, but the Argentine - who cost the Villans £33m - managed nine more goals and 10 more assists than Cantwell in that campaign, which suggests that the Englishman wouldn't be an upgrade despite a higher fee being mooted for him.

Villa fans react
