A number of Aston Villa supporters have hit out at John McGinn on social media for his first half display against West Brom on Sunday evening.

Dean Smith made three changes from the side which lost 2-1 to Manchester City on Wednesday, with Ross Barkley, Anwar El Ghazi and Ahmed Elmohamady coming in for Marvelous Nakamba, Jacob Ramsey and the suspended Matty Cash.

However, it was McGinn‘s performance which had a number of Villa fans talking online, and not for the right reasons. The 26-year-old was making his 31st Premier League start of the season, turning out alongside Douglas Luiz in a deeper midfield role with Barkley more advanced.

His display didn't exactly catch the eye though, with El Ghazi and Matheus Pereira converting penalties in a lively first 45 minutes at Villa Park. The Scotland international was barely involved in the first half, misplacing a number of passes and coming out second best in many duels.
