Aston Villa left-back Matt Targett has had a wonderful season so far, and club legend Gabriel Agbonlahor has been piling the praise on the 25 year-old.
What Agbonlahor had to say about Targett
Speaking to Football Insider, Agbonlahor said: “In the last 15 years, he’s the best left-back Villa have had. Even during my time and the left-backs I played with, I look at Matt Targett and he’s the best we’ve had in the last 15 years since I made my debut.”
“He’s so good going forward, he has a good connection with Jack Grealish on that side. He can defend, he’s proved this season he can defend against the top teams.
“He’s really comfortable on the ball, if he can continue to put in these performances then there is 100 per cent no reason why he can’t get into the England squad.”
Targett has been crucial this campaign
It has been a very solid campaign so far for the left-back and in 18 appearances, he has managed 1.7 tackles, 1.7 interceptions and 2.3 clearances per game (WhoScored). He has also picked up one assist. These type of stats highlight how hard it has been to get past him and he is a huge reason as to why the club already have nine clean sheets in the Premier League this season.
No doubt Dean Smith will be very proud of the defender he brought to Villa Park. His performances so far this campaign have been of great quality, and if he can keep it up, then there definitely might be more shouts alongside Agbonlahor’s that are calling for him to make the England squad in the near future.
