Many Aston Villa fans are gutted to hear the latest injury update on Matty Cash provided by The Athletic journalist Gregg Evans.
Evans’ tweet revealed that Cash will be out for a few weeks due after having to be substituted against Brighton at the Amex because of his injury.
This will obviously be frustrating for the club as the 23 year-old has been part of a defence that has kept the second-most clean sheets in the division (12). Therefore a slight change in the defence could have a big impact on the squad. One fan said this news is a ‘massive blow’.
Trevor Sinclair praised Cash earlier this month saying on talkSPORT (2:29pm, February 6, 2021): “Both full-backs Matty Cash and Matt Target were excellent.”
“They really stuck to their task and served the team really well with unselfish play. Didn’t come out of that shape, and I am going to give it (the Man of the Match award) to Matty Cash. I just thought he was exceptional today.”
It is easy to see why fans are worried, Cash has picked up two assists, but more importantly he has been a rock in the defence, managing 2.6 tackles, 2.3 interceptions and 3.1 clearances a game (WhoScored). For now Ahmed Elmohamady will fill in whilst Cash is absent, and there will be a lot of pressure on the Egyptian to succeed in this period that he is called upon.
Here is how Villa fans reacted to the news:
“Hope I’m wrong but it’s a huge blow! Elmo doesn’t engage he gives way to much space and stands off where as cash is either flying in on receiving the ball or touch tight! Elmo tries to block needs to get tighter it’s like he knows his legs have gone and doesn’t want to get done”
“That’s a massive blow. He’s such a huge part of the way the team play. Elmo is steady but it’s a huge difference in pace and energy. It’ll also mean he’ll need more protection, so Trez will have to start I think. That in turn affects our potential potency in attack.”
“Big blow but think we can patch the back line up. Would be more worried if Grealish was out, hopefully that shinbone injury never reoccurs.”
“Cash out is a big blow but Villa’s few weeks. Can lead to longer as we’ve seen in the past. Has to be Elmo to replace Cash but worries me a bit, Trez has to be the right winger to assist Elmo at every opportunity especially against possibly Barnes/Raphinha the next 2 games.”
“The downside of this is not so much Elmo comes in, always does a job, its they will probably bring back Trez as well. Dog and Duck.”
“It may be what we need in a strange way. Should mean trez starts on right, more balance on right defensivly is good. We attack down the left. Trez pops up at bk post.”
