Aston Villa 'have made contact' with USA and Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie over a move to the club, according to reliable journalist John Townley.

The Lowdown: McKennie impresses at World Cup

The 24-year-old is fresh off the back of an impressive 2022 World Cup with America, having started all four of his country's matches in Qatar.

McKennie has been linked with joining Villa in the January transfer window, with Unai Emery seeing him as a potential midfield option to come in.

Despite making 10 starts for Juventus in Serie A this season, it could be that his current club are happy to allow him to move on.

The Latest: Villa 'have made contact'

Taking to Twitter, Townley provided a key update, claiming that Villa had made progress regarding a move for McKennie, alongside the expected signing of Alex Moreno:

"#AVFC are expected to complete a deal to sign Alex Moreno as Unai Emery targets several new additions this month.

"Waiting on Gerard Deulofeu update, while Villa have also made contact with Juventus for Weston McKennie."

The Verdict: Potentially excellent signing

McKennie could be a great piece of business by Villa if they can get a transfer over the line, with the American hailed as a 'dangerous' player by Clint Dempsey.

Douglas Luiz and John McGinn could use more competition in midfield - the latter hasn't scored in the Premier League in 2022/23 - and the Juve man could add fresh legs and energy to a vital area of the pitch.

Whether or not Villa can get a deal over the line or not remains to be seen, but this is exactly the type of player that Emery would surely want, in terms of increasing his squad depth.
